Historic recipe from Malinda Russell's 1866 cookbook "A Domestic Cook Book". Page 40. One of the earliest known cookbooks by an African American author.
This is a historical remedy, not a culinary recipe. Sweet oil (olive oil) creates a protective barrier over burns, while raw potato contains catalase enzyme and starch that may provide cooling relief through evaporation. However, modern medical consensus recommends cool running water for burns, not oil or food products, as oils can trap heat and increase burn severity. This recipe is of historical interest only and should not be used for actual burn treatment.

After applying sweet oil, scrape the inside of a raw potato, lay it on the burn.
In a short time put on fresh potato; repeat it quite often; it draws out the fire and gives immediate relief.
