Historic recipe from Malinda Russell's 1866 cookbook "A Domestic Cook Book". Page 39. One of the earliest known cookbooks by an African American author.
This is a historic hair oil formulation, not a food recipe. Castor oil provides a thick, moisturizing base that coats hair shafts. Alcohol acts as a solvent to blend the oils and helps the product penetrate hair cuticles while evaporating quickly. Citronella oil adds fragrance and mild antimicrobial properties. The emulsion created by vigorous shaking temporarily suspends these ingredients.

Mixed and well shaken.
This product must be made ahead as it requires aging. Shake vigorously for 2-3 minutes when first mixed, then allow to rest for 24 hours. Shake again before each use as the ingredients will naturally separate over time.
Store in dark glass bottles away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep tightly sealed in a cool, dry place. The high alcohol content acts as a preservative. Shelf life is approximately 6-12 months. Shake well before each use as separation is natural.
